Peak shipping costs and delays: check your lane before changing prices

Use the actual route, billable weight and carrier notice instead of a global surcharge or strike headline.

Source checked:

Timing: Carrier guidance checked 24 October 2026. Amounts and operating notices can change.

Does this affect my business?

Sellers booking international parcels or replenishing EU stock during the peak season.

What do we know?

Price your own lane. DHL’s published schedule varies by origin and destination and uses billing weight; fuel surcharge also applies. The frequently quoted US$1.03/lb and US$0.96/lb figures are specific China/Hong Kong lanes, not universal rates for sellers in Japan, Europe or North America. Confirm your own country page and contracted rate.

Ask about the affected operation. A port headline does not establish the delay on your booking. Check the carrier notice, vessel, terminal, inland connection, delivery appointment and empty-container return. Ask which dates are confirmed and when the estimate will next be updated.

Compare choices before paying for speed. Request an all-in quote for the current and alternative route, including storage, detention/demurrage and any change fees. Compare that extra cost with the contribution at risk from missing stock. No uniform three-to-five-day buffer or automatic free-time extension is established for every shipment.

Start with these checks. You may already have what you need.

QuestionWhat to checkUseful next step
What is the packed shipment’s real cost?Service, origin/destination, actual or dimensional billing weight and included surcharges.Obtain a dated all-in quote.
Is my booking actually affected?Carrier advisory, terminal, vessel and inland handover.Request a booking-specific update.
Is a reroute worth the additional cost?Rebooking, storage, lost margin and feasible delivery date.Choose using the shipment’s economics, not a general alarm.
