Selling low-value goods to Malaysia: check tax collection before copying a price
A low competitor price does not tell you whether your own direct-shipping route is profitable.

Does this affect my business?
Sellers or marketplace operators sending eligible online purchases from abroad to consumers in Malaysia.
What do we know?
Identify the flow. The Malaysian Customs FAQ covers eligible goods priced at no more than MYR500 and brought into Malaysia by land, sea or air. Defined excluded goods have different treatment. This article does not establish that every item below that price has identical import obligations.
Check who collects. The FAQ specifies 10% LVG sales tax and registration when LVG sales into Malaysia exceed MYR500,000 in twelve months. It includes online marketplace operators in its seller definition. Review the actual platform invoice and collection arrangement before deciding whether your business needs another registration or charge.
Use your own numbers. Our practical worksheet starts with product cost and adds the applicable tax, international and last-mile shipping, platform charges, discounts and expected returns. Compare direct shipping with an available local-stock route on the same basis. A few low-priced listings do not prove a general market price, a standard platform commission or a profitable route for your business.
Start with these checks. You may already have what you need.
| Question | What to check | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Are these goods and this import flow in scope? | Product, selling price, dispatch origin and destination. | Check the official LVG definition and exclusions. |
| Who is collecting the tax for the order? | Marketplace terms, invoice and relevant sales threshold. | Clarify existing collection before adding a charge or registration. |
| Does my actual route leave a margin? | Tax, fees, packed delivery cost and returns. | Calculate one SKU before matching a competitor’s price. |
