Amazon GTIN exemptions: check the product before buying barcodes
An exemption is a listing route for eligible products, not a substitute for brand or category approval.

Does this affect my business?
Amazon sellers listing products without a manufacturer-provided product identifier.
What do we know?
Do you already have a product ID? Start with the manufacturer and physical packaging. Amazon’s exemption route is for eligible products without the required identifier. Buying another barcode is not automatically necessary, and an existing barcode should not be ignored to seek an exemption.
Prepare evidence of the real product. Amazon’s guidance asks for the product name and two to nine real-world images covering the product and packaging. Where branded, the applied-for name must match permanently affixed branding. A loose branded paper next to an unbranded item does not show that.
Keep approvals separate. A GTIN exemption does not grant a trademark, Brand Registry enrolment or permission to sell a restricted category. Approval can be store/category specific. Use the actual business and product facts; do not describe a branded product as generic just to bypass an application. If rejected, address the reason shown before submitting another version.
Start with these checks. You may already have what you need.
| Question | What to check | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Does the product already have a valid identifier? | Manufacturer records and packaging barcode. | Use the established identifier when appropriate. |
| Do the application and images match? | Exact brand name, real photographs, permanent product/packaging branding. | Photograph the actual item rather than adding a digital logo. |
| Are other approvals still needed? | Store, category restrictions and brand permissions. | Check each approval separately. |
